Solomon Teklai is the founder of Tutoring and Mentoring Program. A trailblazer, unlike anyone, Solomon is the very embodiment of volunteerism.Solomon was born in the town of Gonder in Northern Ethiopia where he lived until he was in his early teens. He left Ethiopia as a very young man and after a perilous journey to and life in Sudan, he landed in the big apple where he completed high school and went on to earn his undergraduate degree in Bio-Chemistry from the City College of New York.

He moved to the Washington D.C. metro area and earned a Master’s degree in Life Sciences from the University of Maryland and embarked on a high school teaching career that lasted a total of eight years. Solomon joined Montgomery College in 2005 as a chemistry professor where he also served as Science Club co-advisor and a member of the curriculum committee. Solomon also held part-time teaching positions at Marymount University and Trinity College. Ever selfless and civic-minded, Solomon quit a well-paying part-time teaching job at Trinity College because the schedule conflicted with his commitment at TMP.

Solomon’s volunteer work and community leadership activities are not limited to TMP. In addition to volunteering his time and considerable talent to all kinds of worthy causes, he is also a founding member and organizer of the group that worked long and hard to get an Ethiopian city named as a sister city of Montgomery County, MD. He is also a member of the Montgomery County African advisory group.Solomon is more than just a tutor or a mentor to all the young people whose lives he touched.
